Segments in Autoresponders

Segmentation ensures you can target your subscribers with the most relevant content. That’s why eMail Liaison has expanded our segmentation features, including the release of our new Segments Builder and delivering more flexibility in our rules functionality.

And in response to your requests, eMail Liaison is proud to unveil new segments in autoresponders. Now you can send your customers more relevant autoresponder emails – at precisely the best times to reach them.

Who will receive this email

Target your dialog directly to your female audience.

Personalized Welcome Emails

Say you run an online clothing store and capture gender information when your customers sign up. Now you can use that information to send gender-appropriate versions of your welcome email, ensuring your communications are more relevant and personal.

Subscriber Birthday

This VIP customer will automatically receive a special birthday gift, every year.

Targeted Birthday Emails

If you’re sending birthday emails to customers, you could apply segments to make the campaign even more relevant. For example, you could identify VIP customers based on how much they’ve spent with you over the past year, then target those VIPs with a special birthday gift.

Subscription Renewal Series

Let’s now say you sell annual software subscriptions. Using the exact match of a date autoresponder option, you could set up a series that sends a renewal notification out 30 days before the subscription expiration date.

You can then use information regarding each customer’s payment status to target those who have not renewed at the 15-day and 7-day marks. Each email in the series would only be sent to those who fell into the unpaid segment, with status automatically refreshed each time updated payment information was uploaded

We look forward to seeing how these new features improve your communications with subscribers – and how they can drive even better results for your business!

Seven Marketing Sins

June 13th, 2012

Impatient... great marketing takes time. Doing it wrong ten times costs much more and takes longer than doing it slowly, but right, over the same period of time.

Selfish... we have a choice, and if we sense that this is all about you, not us, our choice will be to go somewhere else.

Self-absorbed… you don’t buy from you, others buy from you. They don’t care about your business and your troubles nearly as much as you do.

Deceitful… see selfish, above. If you don’t tell us the truth, it’s probably because you’re selfish. How urgent can your needs be that you would sacrifice your future to get something now?

Inconsistent… we’re not paying that much attention, but when we do, it helps if you are similar to the voice we heard from last time.

Angry… at us? Why are you angry at us? It’s not something we want to be part of, thanks.

Jealous… is someone doing better than you? Of course they are. There’s always someone doing better than you. But if you let your jealousy change your products or your attitude or your story, we’re going to leave.

Of course, they’re not marketing sins, they’re human failings.

Humility, empathy, generosity, patience and kindness, combined with the arrogance of the brilliant inventor, are a potent alternative.

As always, thank you Seth Godin for your insights.

Renting vs. Buying Email Lists

April 17th, 2012

For many businesses, obtaining an email list can be a quick and effective route to reaching a large number of subscribers in very short order.

However, the means by which that list is obtained is of critical importance, and companies that do not tread carefully can find themselves in a world of peril.

List Rental
Generally speaking, renting email lists is a recognized and accepted practice in digital marketing. When you rent a list, the owner of that list will send emails to those subscribers on your behalf. As an advertiser, you never see the email addresses on that list, because the owner of the list does all of the sending. Every time an email is sent to that list’s recipients, you pay a fee.

List Purchase
When you purchase an email list, you take ownership of the actual list. After the purchase is made, you pay no more fees and you can send emails to the list as you please.

While this may sound like a great deal, it is usually anything but. Here’s why:

The value of an email list is only preserved if it is not abused. When you purchase any given list, you’re usually not the first (or the last) person to do so. The individuals on that list may have been spammed hundreds of times by other purchasers. And they generally have not given the list seller permission to allow receipt of marketing emails from third parties (like you).

In the best case scenario, your email campaign will get at abysmal response. At the other end of the spectrum, you could be labeled a spammer and hit with big fines and blacklisting.

Your Best Option
Of course, your best option is almost always to build your own list of subscribers who actively want to receive communications from you. Renting a list often has its place, but can become expensive for ongoing communications, and matching rented lists to your marketing needs is an imprecise science at best.

eMail Liaison recently introduced an incredible new feature called Worldview that allows you to visualize your campaign reports in an entirely different way. There’s really nothing like it, and we’re excited to offer it to our customers.

With Worldview, you can see who is opening, reading and sharing your emails, all in real-time on a beautiful user interface. It’s a gorgeous, simple and meaningful way to see the faces of the people with whom you are communicating.

Share your Worldview results

Share the View
Worldview offers both private views (including your subscribers’ names, email addresses and avatars) and public views (which omit these personal details) that you can share with others.

Enjoy Worldview for Free
eMail Liaison is pleased to offer Worldview for free with every campaign you send. In fact, if you’ve sent a campaign within the past week, you’ll find a new Worldview link in your control panel sidebar. All of us here are tremendously excited about this new functionality, and hope you’ll find it as informative and illuminating as we do.
